I create artworks that focus on the cats featured in ukiyo-e prints. Ukiyo-e was super popular with common people back in Japan from the Edo period through to the Taisho period. These prints often showed scenes from daily life, and cats actually popped up a lot—especially as pets.
Out of all the animals in ukiyo-e, cats were drawn the most. They often show up in scenes with women, just going about their day. There’s something really charming and natural about the way these women interact with their cats—their gestures, the way they tilt their heads, their facial expressions. It’s all so effortlessly elegant and a bit flirtatious.
